Hradčany: Hotels and Accommodation

Hradčany combines a protected, species-rich landscape with traces of medieval fortifications and other historical sites. The cadastral area of Hradčany u Žehuně is also located in the Žehuňský rybník–Obora Kněžičky Bird Protection Area. The area is significant as a breeding ground for 131 bird species and as a migration area for waterbirds and birds of prey.

Nature

The Žehuňsko area combines forests on uplands, steep white slopes with thermophilous oak forests, and wetland habitats around ponds. It contains well-preserved thermophilous oak forests with the purple orchid and other notable thermophilous plants, including dittany, blue gromwell, Michel's sedge, and the white helleborine.

The Žehuňsko–Báň Nature Monument covers 10.58 hectares at an elevation of 240 to 270 metres. It consists of a former orchard and a former pasture with partly shrub-rich forest-steppe, a white slope with exposed bedrock, and young forests with downy oaks. The Nature Monument is a south-facing protected slope in Hradčany, which was placed under protection on 29 December 1972. The slope offers a view of the landscape of the middle Elbe region.

Culture and History

Hradčany is home to a restored monument to the fallen of the First World War, made of yellow sandstone with a figurative relief.

Stará Báň preserves a horseshoe-shaped summit platform measuring approximately 26 × 19 metres, protected on three sides by a prominent ditch. On the southern and eastern sides, an outer rampart supplements the site and reaches a height of up to 3 metres. Stará Báň is the preserved earthwork of a medieval fortification dating from approximately the 14th century, which was associated with the local landed nobility. Its existence is documented in 1497; in 1550, the site was described as deserted.

The Zámeček hill is a well-preserved conical earth mound that is surrounded by a circular ditch and lies near a former forester's lodge. The Zámeček archaeological site also documents the remains of a medieval castle complex that has since disappeared, as well as the vanished medieval village of Mastnice.

Things to Do

A Class III cycle route runs through Hradčany u Žehuně and continues via Dlouhopolsko, Opočnice, Běrunice, Městec Králové, and Činěves.

The UŽ6 bunker is accessible by private car; up to four cars can park on the site. A reservation is required for the UŽ6 bunker; the stated sleeping capacity is three people.
