Karlštejn combines cultural history and nature. Both aspects emerge in different places and in different forms.

Culture and History

Karlštejn Castle was originally built by the Bohemian king and later Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV as a country residence. The Karlštejn Wax Museum presents an exhibition featuring fifty wax figures. The House of Clocks features a permanent exhibition of historical clocks. The Karlštejn Museum of Light Fortifications displays weapons and equipment of the pre-war army. In the outdoor area of the Karlštejn Nativity Scene Museum is a movable alchemical workshop from the time of Rudolf II’s reign.

Nature

The entire area of the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve consists of Paleozoic rocks from the Silurian and Devonian periods, which are approximately 400 million years old. More than 100 caves have been recorded in the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve. The Karlštejn National Nature Reserve is considered the most typical and extensive example of the nature of the Bohemian Karst.
