Zalešany – Nature, Bridge and Local History

The Zalešanské maďaly stand on the western edge of Zalešany at the intersection of field paths near “Na Františku”. They are a group of two trees planted around 1830 and protected as natural monuments. In the vicinity of Zalešany, walks are considered an opportunity for recreation.

The Chapel of Saint Ludmila in Zalešany was built in 1811. Dating from around 1830 is the brick St. Francis wayside shrine, which bears a painted image of Saint Francis of Assisi. The shrine was repaired in 1992 and 2016; during the 2016 repairs, its surroundings were also landscaped and supplemented with benches.

The road bridge in Zalešany is a stone, two-arch bridge over the Výrovka dating from the early 19th century. A fragment of a millstone bearing the year 1863 and the initials “J. F.” is set into its eastern wall. A plaque next to it refers to a repair in 1927. The road bridge is freely accessible.

The stone cross in Zalešany commemorates a farmer who was buried under timber on 4 December 1661. The history of milling is also part of the local memorial heritage: the Zalešany Mill burned down to its foundations in 1914. The present building was erected in the same year and has borne the name Hamplův mlýn ever since.

The Pečky–Kouřim railway line, put into operation in 1882, gave Zalešany a development boost. Afterwards, the number of houses rose to 33 and the population to 216. Electricity was first introduced in Zalešany in 1920, initially to the manor farm and Hamplův mlýn.
