Nature and Landscape

The Čerňavina Nature Reserve is located on the summit and steep slopes of Ostrý (1,044.4 m above sea level) in the Ropická ridge. It comprises natural beech stands of Carpathian type, interspersed with Norway spruce, sycamore maple and fir at higher elevations in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids.

Košařiska is a typical foothill settlement with dispersed development. Mount Kozubová is located nearby; the mountains Smrčina, Javorový and Polka are in the vicinity of Košařiska.

Culture and History

The Turistická chata na Ostrém has stood at its location in Košařiska since 1935 and was built on a former cattle salaš on the southwestern slope of Mount Ostrý in the “Na Ostrým” area. The “Po stopách salašnictví v Košařiskách” educational trail was created in 2012 for tourists and residents.

Several typical Beskids wooden houses have been preserved in Košařiska. As part of the traditional historical pastoral economy, bryndza was made from particularly rich milk at the end of summer and sold in the cities. In the wider regional surroundings of Košařiska lies Kończyce Małe Castle – Zamek XV w.

Traditions and Events

A re-enactment of the “Miyszani łowiec” tradition takes place annually in May in Košařiska. The May event includes a craft market, performances by folk bands, as well as food and drinks.

In September, Košařiska celebrates the traditional “Rozsod” custom, during which sheep and other livestock were driven from the mountain sheepfolds to the village and reassigned to their owners.
