Nature and Landscape
The Beskids Protected Landscape Area covers approximately 43% of Frýdek-Místek District. Forests account for 51% of the district's area, and therefore more than half. In the wider Beskids Protected Landscape Area, mountain ridges, deep valleys, extensive forests, orchid-rich meadows, and sheep pastures shape the landscape.
The natural history department of the Muzeum Beskyd displays 200 animals from the Beskids, including lynx, wolf, and bear.
Culture and History
Muzeum Beskyd is housed in Frýdek Castle, where it has a permanent exhibition. The museum presents traditional crafts and the way of life of people living at the foot of the Beskids. More than 800 exhibits include a loom, a traditional Wallachian room, and information about sheep farming. Visitors to the castle can also see the Knights' Hall, climb the observation tower, and visit the Chapel of Saint Barbara.
Frýdek-Místek has two restored historic centres. Frýdek-Místek District also has the largest number of wooden churches in the Czech Republic. The Church of Saints John and Paul is located in Místek.
The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Frýdek-Místek was an important pilgrimage centre in Silesia. It is visible from Lysá hora and Radhošť.
Hukvaldy Castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century and apparently was never conquered. The best-preserved structure is the Chapel of Saint Andrew. The castle tower offers views towards the Beskids, Kopřivnice, Příbor, Fryčovice, and Ostrava.
Mountains and Activities
Lysá hora has several ascent routes and reaches an altitude of 1,323 metres. Ostravice, a frequent starting point for the ascent of Lysá hora, can be reached by train from Frýdek-Místek. The route from Papežov near Krásná to Lysá hora is fully paved and is described as the only route suitable for road cyclists.
The Beskids within the district offer downhill skiing. Paragliding is also available as an active recreational pursuit in the district's Beskids area. Water sports are possible at the Žermanice Reservoir.
Winter
The Morávka-Sviňorky ski area has two snow-covered slopes: a 600-metre red slope and a 300-metre blue slope. It offers ski lessons, equipment rental, and horse-drawn sleigh transport from the car park to the slopes.
