Litultovice: Castle History, Windmill and Nature Trail

The fortress of Litultovice was converted into a Renaissance castle by Jan Stoš of Kounic; this conversion was probably completed in 1579. The history of the town also includes sacred buildings and memorial sites with clearly dated details.

Culture

The present-day Church of St. Bartholomew dates from 1847 and was rebuilt in 1925. Next to the church stands a marble cross that was erected in 1881 and consecrated on January 29, 1882. There is also an Immaculata statue with an access staircase at the church.

The architectural history of the castle and the sacred monuments clearly differ in form: while the Renaissance conversion altered the former fortress, the church, cross and Immaculata statue document various elements of the town’s ecclesiastical character.

At the Litultovice cemetery, the monument to those who fell in the First World War is set into the cemetery wall. It bears a granite plaque with portraits of the fallen; on the outside there is a black granite plaque with their names. The crypt of the cemetery chapel contains the remains of members of the Rolsberg family, whose construction was completed in 1864.

Landscape and Technology

At the beginning of the 19th century, a landscaped park was created near Litultovice Castle. Its features include exotic trees and a skittle alley; the park is enclosed by a castle wall.

The grounds thus combine design with specific features: exotic trees define the landscaped character, while the skittle alley points to another clearly identified use within the castle wall. The park therefore stands as a separate element alongside the castle building and the sacred sites.

The Choltice windmill was built in 1833 in nearby Sádek and moved to Choltice in 1878. It is one of the few mills to have preserved complete and original grain-processing technology. In this example, the place of construction and the later location are in different towns.

The windmill brings together two historical levels: its original construction site in Sádek and its later location in Choltice are part of the history of the same technical monument. The preserved grain-processing technology adds a specific feature to this relocation between places.

Experiences

On the “Pilný mlýn” nature trail, visitors can try out a dendrophone made from various types of wood and play simple melodies on it. The nature trail also includes a sensory path, which is walked barefoot and with the eyes closed. After the final station is added in spring, the sensory path should be fully operational.

On the route of the Hvozdnický Express, Railway Capital resumed operations at least on weekends during the main season.
