At Landek Park, the mining exhibition includes a descent into the mine in the original hoisting cage and presents a unique collection of respiratory protection equipment, as well as its development from 1883 to the present day.

Industrial History

Former mining sites in Ostrava house museums and form part of the city’s industrial heritage. Dolní Vítkovice comprises a site formerly shaped by coal mining and iron production, which now serves as an educational, social and cultural centre.

Dolní Vítkovice offers guided tours on the history of coal mining or the operation of blast furnaces. The Science and Technology Centre offers interactive exhibitions for children and adults.

Nature and Science

At the Landek National Nature Monument, coal-bearing strata of Carboniferous type that formed 250 million years ago are exposed in numerous coal seam outcrops. A nature and mining history educational trail also runs through the Landek National Nature Monument.

The Botanical Park at Ostrava Zoo has three botanical educational trails with a total length of 6 kilometres. Ostrava Planetarium offers a regular programme for visitors of all ages, focusing on astronomy as well as natural and technical sciences.

Culture and Views

The Bolt Tower is a 20-metre-high extension of Blast Furnace No. 1. The observation platform at a height of 80 metres offers views of Vítkovice.

Silesian Ostrava Castle is a stone fortress dating from the 13th century. Its interior houses exhibitions on the history of the castle, the city and the entire region.

The observation tower of the New City Hall offers a lift ride to a height of 73 metres and views of Silesian Ostrava, Moravian Ostrava, as well as the city districts of Přívoz, Mariánské Hory, Vítkovice and Poruba.

Ostrava is very easily accessible by car, train and plane.
