Culture
The Moravská Ostrava urban heritage zone showcases architecture and urban planning from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Ostrava Museum focuses on art history, the history of Ostrava and mining, ethnography, archaeology, palaeontology, geology and mineralogy, as well as the nature and landscape of the Ostrava region. It interprets the city’s history from its foundation in 1267 to 1989. The mining exhibition includes a collection of mine lamps and measuring instruments, as well as an interactive map from 1928 showing the city’s winding shafts.
The exhibition on living nature and the landscape covers floodplain forests in the Odra river basin, regional forests, rivers, ponds, meadows and the urban landscape. Ostravské kulturní stezky create their maps in cooperation with specialists in history, architecture, culture and nature.
Technology
Velký svět techniky has four permanent interactive exhibitions: Dětský svět, Svět vědy a objevů, Svět civilizace and Svět přírody. Malý svět techniky U6 presents an interactive history of technological progress from the steam engine to modern engines. It includes original large blowers and around 100 playful exhibits. The Velký svět techniky building is fully accessible, while the Malý svět techniky U6 building is partially accessible. Visitors should allow around four to five hours for Velký svět techniky.
Gong is a venue for international conferences and congresses, concerts and art exhibitions. The building is housed in a former gas holder that once stored purified blast-furnace gas. Dolní Vítkovice offers guided tours focusing on the history of coal mining and the operation of blast furnaces.
Nature
Landek lies near the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice rivers. There, a national natural monument with rich vegetation and fauna combines with a technical monument belonging to the Mining Museum. An educational trail focused on science and mining leads to exposed Carboniferous coal seams. Polanská niva can be visited as part of special guided excursions with a nature ranger.
The Polanská niva National Nature Reserve covers 50 hectares of forest. It forms part of the Oderská niva biocentre and the Poodří European site and bird protection area. Rezavka Nature Reserve is characterised by wetlands and floodplain vegetation. The thermally active interior of the Ema spoil heap reaches temperatures of up to 1,500°C and produces porcelanite and jasper.
Around one tenth of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area lies within the city of Ostrava; the protected area also extends into the Nový Jičín and Frýdek-Místek districts.
Getting around
Ostrava’s public transport is integrated into ODIS and uses trams, buses and trolleybuses. Landek Park is served by DPO bus routes 34, 52, 56, 67 and 68; they stop at the Hornické muzeum stop. A cycle route follows the Ostravice and Odra rivers to Landek and runs along Cycle Route G.
The Poruba circular trail is marked with local blue-and-white tourist signs and can be reached by tram lines 7, 8 and 17 at Hlavní třída.
Cuisine
Visitor information highlights Czech, regional and international cuisine, as well as pub specialities such as utopenci and pickled Hermelín. A 3.3-kilometre visitor route focuses on Ostrava and regional craft breweries. The “Ostravské hospody” route explores 19th-century taverns and the history of brewing in Ostrava.
