Nature

A closer look at Jeníkov leads to the Louky v Jeníkově area. There are wet sedge communities in marshy meadows with reeds; these areas are located on the site of former silted-up ponds. The area also includes transitional mires, calcium-poor mire hollows, stands of tall sedges, wet meadows with greater knapweed, wet meadows with meadowsweet, seasonally wet purple moor-grass meadows, and mat-grass swards with protected and endangered plant and animal species. The wildlife includes numerous populations of common frogs, green frogs, and common toads; the area is also inhabited by sand lizards and European adders.

Geographical setting

Jeníkov is located on Road 343 between Hlinsko and Svratka. In the vicinity of Jeníkov to the north lies the settlement of Pešava, which, at 697 m, is the highest elevation in the Železné hory. Also in the vicinity, the hill near Jeníkov offers views towards Kameničky, Žákova hora, and Devět skal near Herálec.

History

Jeníkov developed as a forest village with farmsteads on both sides of the road. In the centre, the original buildings with smallholders’ cottages are still discernible today. The independent settlement group “Na dolním konci” on the so-called village green consists of houses belonging to former landless labourers. The inhabitants’ most important historical occupations included foothill agriculture, pottery, and weaving.

Culture

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in the centre of Jeníkov dates from 1900 and was built on the site of a former wooden bell tower. It was reconstructed and has a wrought-iron fence made by artistic blacksmith Pavel Jekl; it was consecrated in 2010. The chapel belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Kameničky. The municipality also offers an online tour of the exhibition “Jeníkov v proměnách času”.
