Culture and History

The Church of St. Wenceslas in Řestoky is registered as an immovable cultural monument in the national heritage system. Despite later repairs and alterations, it retains its late Romanesque architectural character and bears traces of medieval wall paintings. During restoration in 1901, a new altar dedicated to Saint Wenceslas was acquired. The church also had a 170-kilogram bell cast in 1492, which was saved from confiscation for military purposes.

A Baroque granary belonged to the local manorial estate. Its main section has a decorated façade and is in poor structural condition. The granary in Řestoky has a gable decorated with stone vases; in its storage halls, shaped oak supports carry the beams. The fittings on the main door are considered an example of 18th-century metalwork.

People and Local Connections

The writer Helena Šmahelová was born in Řestoky on 14 July 1910. Her later works dealt primarily with the problems of young people, especially adolescent girls. Václav Škroup, the great-grandfather of the composer František Škroup, was also born in Řestoky; he taught for a short time at the local school.

Josef Jeremiáš worked in Řestoky as a teacher, founder of the community gardens, chronicler and cultural reformer, and lived from 1808 to 1883. The Řestoky Volunteer Fire Brigade, SDH Řestoky, was founded in 1888 by eighteen founding members.

Sports and Events

Sports facilities in Řestoky include a nohejbal court. The MTB Schlapey Řestoky cycling club established the tradition of children's bicycle races under the name “Májové ježděníčko”. On 11 December 2011, a public cycling club was founded in Řestoky.

In 2005, a traditional Posvícenecký tournament for teams of three was scheduled to take place in Řestoky in September. The 2005 activity plan also included the organization of a traditional ball by SDH Řestoky. A Christmas concert is held in the Church of St. Wenceslas.

Practical Information

No railway line runs through Řestoky, and there are no marked hiking trails there. Chrast, Hrochův Týnec and, in particular, Chrudim are easily accessible from Řestoky.
