History

The Otava shaped historical life in Horní Poříčí and Dolní Poříčí. For a long time, freshwater pearl mussels were found in the river; their harvesting was discontinued there in 1908 and was not resumed afterward. Wood from the Šumava forests was transported along the Otava as far as Prague; the first written record of log rafting dates back to 1316.

A Francis turbine installed in the mill building in Dolní Poříčí supplied Dolní Poříčí and Horní Poříčí with electricity from 1919 onward. The Otava is used for sport fishing and water sports.
