Katovice: Hotels and Accommodations

On the right bank of the Otava River in Katovice are so-called sejpys, remnants of gold washing. On the square between the church and the municipal office stands the stone pillory; heritage protection applies exclusively to the pillory itself. Originally, it stood in front of the southern portal of the church and was a symbol of municipal judicial power as well as a place of public punishment, disgrace, and humiliation.

Culture

A preserved early Gothic portal is located on the southern side of the Church of St. James and Philip. The Church of St. Philip and James was originally an early Gothic structure from the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the 14th century and between 1580 and 1582, and given a Baroque makeover in 1761. Services are held in the church on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m.

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk by the bridge is among Katovice’s immovable cultural monuments. In the cemetery, a mass grave of the victims of a death march is listed as cultural heritage. The memorial stone has stood in the town center since 1972; originally, it was located below Kněží hora on the left bank of the Otava River.

The original watermill building is also considered architecturally interesting in Katovice. The railway station’s reception building is likewise mentioned as an architecturally interesting structure.

Nature and Trails

The Kněží hora hillfort is designated as a currently protected archaeological feature. In the 9th century, an elliptical Slavic hillfort covering a total area of approximately 8 hectares stood on Kněží hora. Up to four successive fortification ramparts are still visible in places today. The Kněží hora nature reserve covers 13.51 hectares of thermophilous oak forest with preserved forest flora.

The Kněží hora educational trail has five information stations and focuses thematically on history and nature. It begins at Husovo náměstí in Katovice and ends in Horní Poříčí at the Březový potok crossroads at the foot of Katovická hora. Along the Otava River, riverside paths for pedestrians are connected between Strakonice and Sušice. Katovice also has a north–south connection for pedestrians and cyclists, crossing the Otava via a new footbridge and linking to public infrastructure facilities.

Events

Katovické Vinohraní reached its tenth edition in 2025. At this event, visitors could taste wine from the Helena, Suský, and Turek wineries in Velké Pavlovice. Katovický Otesánek was held for the ninth time in 2023.
