Culture and History

Following reconstruction after the fires of 1742 and 1808, the Church of St. Bartholomew acquired its present appearance. Its 24.8-meter-high, five-story prismatic tower was added in 1556 and is topped with a Renaissance cupola. The rectory behind the church was built in the Neoclassical style in 1796.

In front of the church tower stands a monument erected in 1933 to the victims of the First World War. It bears a statue of a legionnaire by the sculptor Karla Vobišová-Žáková (1887–1961), who was born in Kunžak. Kunžak is also home to five protected wayside shrines: two in the park near the church and three at their original locations.

Log house No. 63 is a rare surviving example of an older type of regional vernacular dwelling. Kunžak developed at a crossroads of trade routes, while Velké Podolí is considered the oldest part of Kunžak. Below the school stands the town's originally largest stone fountain, dating from 1815.

Nature

The Javorka spring is located on Bystřická Street in Kunžak at an elevation of 634 meters. Vysoký kámen is 738 meters high and the highest point in the vicinity of Kunžak. About one kilometer west of Kunžak, a protected natural monument covering 0.11 hectares is home to a notable occurrence of common juniper; its gene pool is protected.

The Česká Kanada area is bordered by Kunžak, Nová Bystřice, and Slavonice and was declared a nature reserve in 1994.

Water and Trails

Komorník Pond covers 56 hectares and is three kilometers long. It was created in 1575 by Zachariáš of Hradec and is one of the bodies of water in Česká Kanada that are popular for swimming in summer.

The Czech Canada Trail reaches Kunžak about three kilometers from Krvavý Pond via a quiet road. From the Kunžak section of the Czech Canada Trail, the route follows red-marked hiking trails through a gorge and the Kunžacký Forest toward Vysoký kámen; despite the effects of bark beetle infestation, the landscape is described as picturesque.

The former balancing rock Bývalý viklan Trkal is located about one kilometer from the village of Suchdol u Kunžaku and is easily accessible via a marked blue hiking trail.
