Libějice – History, Landscape and Ways through the Surrounding Area

History and Townscape

Libějice is considered a settlement of early medieval origin. The first written mention dates from 1379 and is associated with the so-called Rožmberk Urbar of 1379. The historical name of the village was Libějovice. Its history therefore includes both the early settlement tradition and the documented historical name. The preserved urban structure and characteristic rural buildings shape the townscape; both are among the municipality’s greatest assets. The rural buildings form the architectural setting in which the bell tower stands out as an individual historic element. Another historical feature is the bell tower from 1872. Its bell dates from 1947 and was restored as part of a reconstruction. The tower and bell thus represent different phases of construction and preservation within the townscape.

Landscape between Fields and Forests

Geographically, Libějice lies in the Malšická pahorkatina, a subregion of the Táborská pahorkatina. Agriculture is the most important land-use function of the landscape; there are very few forested areas in the cadastral territory. In the surroundings of Libějice, by contrast, a mosaic of forests with altered tree-species composition, fields and meadows predominates. The two spatial scales therefore remain distinguishable: the cadastral territory is only sparsely forested, while the nearby landscape also includes forested areas. The limited forest cover of the cadastral territory contrasts with the more diverse mosaic in the surrounding area, where forests, fields and meadows meet. The landscape forms therefore vary between the cadastral territory and the nearby surroundings. Libějice lies in a forest-and-field landscape. In terms of plant production, the agricultural land is an average area. Open fields, meadows and forests with differing compositions thus form the main landscape elements in the surroundings.

Railway Line and Cycle Route

The Tábor–Bechyně railway line has been in operation since 1903. It was built and operated as the first railway in Central Europe to be electric from the outset. Access to the station building or the passenger shelter at Libějice station is barrier-free. The platforms, however, are not accessible without barriers or do not meet the required height. Before travelling on the historic railway, current timetables and applicable conditions should be checked. The Vienna–Prague long-distance cycle route of the Greenways programme also passes through Libějice. Thus, in addition to the electrically operated railway, a long-distance cycling connection forms part of the local transport and route network.

Sacred Wayside Features and Nature Park

Wayside crosses or small sacred shrines stand along the road from Libějice towards Malšice. In Czech, they are called “Boží muka”. Kukle Nature Park lies southwest of Libějice. The surroundings are suitable for walks and hikes; the long-distance cycle route also passes through the village. For specific hiking or cycling plans, current route conditions and traffic information can be checked before departure.
