Landscape and Trails

The 63.7-kilometre cycle route “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” passes through Trhové Sviny and is described as a moderately difficult full-day tour. Trhové Sviny is also a starting point for hiking trails into the Slepičí hory, which are less than 10 kilometres away.

Culture and History

The Trhové Sviny Urban Heritage Zone is centred around a square with a town hall and burgher houses with arcades. A hexagonal stone fountain dating from 1868 stands in Trhové Sviny’s square. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was originally built in the early Gothic style and later remodelled in the late Gothic style. It has a Baroque altar with the late Gothic “Trhovosvineská Madonna” from 1520. The birthplace of Karel Valdauf is now a museum.

In the vicinity of Trhové Sviny, the pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity was built from 1708 to 1710 as a Baroque church with a central layout, three altars and a hexagonal ambulatory. Also nearby is Buškův hamr, a preserved water-powered hammer mill dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex includes a forge, historic tools, a trip hammer, a grinding machine and a blower, all powered by three water wheels. Buškův hamr also houses the exhibition “Řemesla (nejen) na vodě” about crafts and craftspeople in Trhové Sviny and the surrounding area.

In the vicinity of Trhové Sviny, Kovářské dny traditionally take place on the third weekend of August, featuring demonstrations of blacksmithing, a craft market and an entertainment programme. A triangular chapel there contains a spring traditionally believed to have healing powers for eye ailments.

The Trhové Sviny Information Centre provides visitors with information about the town and its immediate and wider surroundings. It organises exhibitions as well as educational, cultural and sporting events for visitors and local residents. From September to December, the Trhové Sviny Municipal Cultural Centre offers six evenings of theatre, humour and music.

Water and Surroundings

Velký rybník is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre and can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. Velký rybník natural swimming area is located on the outskirts of Trhové Sviny in the direction of Nové Hrady and has a seasonal snack stand.
