Nature
The Písečný přesyp u Vlkova Nature Reserve is located near Vlkov and protects the best-preserved sand dune. The nature reserve is not accessible to the public. It is home to rare species of fungi, sand-loving plants and numerous groups of invertebrates; the area is therefore considered a site of European importance.
Mount Hůrka is located near Vlkov. The nearby hills include U Lůsů [Ponědrážka] and (Vyšné) [Val u Veselí nad Lužnicí]. Mount Cihadlo lies in the wider regional surroundings of Vlkov.
Landscape and trails
The Veselské pískovny area stretches between Veselí nad Lužnicí, its district of Horusice, and the municipality of Vlkov. There are five separate gravel lakes there, created by gravel and sand extraction from 1952 to 1986.
The Veselské pískovny educational trail is a 7 km circular route around the Vlkovská pískovna and Lake Jezero Veselí I. It features 14 information boards about the history of the landscape and nature in the area of the lakes. The information boards are available in Czech, German and English; the educational trail also offers the learning game “PÍSEČNOU PLÁŽÍ DO LEDOVÝCH DOB”.
The Veselské pískovny offer opportunities for recreational swimming. However, they are not officially operated outdoor swimming pools.
The Okolo Třeboně educational trail is a 39 km circular route with 22 information stops.
