Protected habitats in the Valtrovický luh include mixed ash-alder floodplain forests as well as mixed floodplain forests with oaks, elms and ash trees. There are also well-preserved hardwood floodplain forests and wet areas with alder stands.
The southern boundary of Valtrovice’s cadastral area is formed by the Dyje, which is lined with floodplain forests. Along the Dyje, the Meandry Dyje Natura 2000 site has been designated at the southern edge of Valtrovice’s planning area. Near a ford by the municipality of Valtrovice, the Dyje features high clayey banks and successive meanders.
In recent years, an offer for water tourism has begun to develop in Valtrovice; equipment can be rented and used for paddling on the Dyje between Znojmo and the Nové Mlýny waterworks.
Church and History
The parish church in Valtrovice is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Its presbytery has a Late Gothic vault. Following a comprehensive reconstruction in 2013, the church won the Jihomoravský kraj competition that same year for the best-restored cultural heritage site in the category of large structures.
The present-day rectory in Valtrovice was founded on 4 March 1748 by Countess Marie z Althana, née Pignatelli. On the way to the Dyje, Valtrovice also has a historically valuable chapel.
Festivals and Public Culture
Masopust in Valtrovice takes place every year in February. It includes a masked procession through the entire municipality accompanied by a band, followed by an evening event.
Krojované hody takes place every year in September. It includes a procession of the costumed group, accompanied by a band, through all of Valtrovice, followed by an evening celebration. Krojované hody is considered the largest cultural event in the municipality of Valtrovice.
St. Nicholas is celebrated in Valtrovice every year in December. The Valtrovický košt is also among the town’s traditional public cultural and social events.
