Doksany Monastery was founded in 1144–1145 as a Premonstratensian convent. The monastery was dissolved under Joseph II in 1782; Terezie Poniatowská had the prelature converted into a château. The Baroque château complex of Doksany is arranged around four courtyards.
Culture and History
During a guided tour of Doksany Monastery, visitors learn about its history, art and spiritual significance. A tour of Doksany Monastery includes a visit to the Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the Romanesque western section of the original medieval basilica.
Visitors can see the so-called Romanesque “crypt” on the grounds of Doksany Monastery. A crypt with 47 columns and an apse have survived from the original Romanesque basilica in Doksany. The Romanesque crypt in Doksany is one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Bohemia.
Nature
The LouĹľek Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral territory of Doksany. It protects mixed floodplain forests along major rivers and the cinnabar jewel beetle (Cucujus cinnaberinus).
Visit
At Doksany Monastery, parking is available in front of the main gate or in the first courtyard outside the lawn area. The excursion “Doksany a jejich okolĂ” begins in Doksany.
