Újezd on the Historic National Border

Újezd between Moravia and Bohemia

Újezd is located on the historic national border between Moravia and Bohemia. Older names for the village are also part of Újezd’s history: in the past, Újezd was also called Oujezd, Aujezd and “Olšový”. The name “Olšový” referred to the many alder trees around Prostřední rybník. The name of the village is therefore connected with a specific landscape around the pond and with a historic border location between two countries. Both aspects give the village a clear geographical and historical context.

Natura 2000 site and Blažkov

Dolní rybník u Újezda is a 9.2421-hectare Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. Dolní rybník u Újezda protects a large population of the species Coleanthus subtilis. Dolní rybník u Újezda is characterized by vegetation found in temporarily drained ponds, reed beds and cultivated meadows. These landscape elements represent a natural area where water bodies, waterside vegetation and open meadows occur together. Nearby Blažkov is 693 metres high and belongs to the Arnolecké hory.

Chapel and pilgrimage

The municipality of Újezd is home to the 19th-century Chapel of Our Lady Queen. There is a cross on the tower of the chapel in Újezd. The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady Queen takes place around 22 August. The chapel and the pilgrimage therefore represent two different forms of local cultural heritage: a preserved building and a recurring religious occasion. Anyone wishing to discover Újezd not only through its landscape but also through its sacred sites will find a clearly identified place of interest here.

Christmas market with regional crafts

Újezd’s Christmas market takes place every year in December and is organized by the tourist association. Punch, mulled wine and hot mead are sold at the Christmas market. Guests can also sample potato patties baked in an oven with poppy seeds and plum jam. Various craftspeople demonstrate their crafts and the results of their work at the Christmas market. The December event thus combines hot drinks, a distinctive local food offering and insights into handicraft work, without requiring an extensive programme of events.

Hiking, cycling and winter sports

The Stezka Přírodním parkem Bohdalovsko has seven stations and is a circular educational trail for cyclists and hikers. In summer, the area around Újezd has a dense network of well-marked hiking trails. In winter, the landscape around Újezd is crossed by cross-country ski trails. European and local cycling routes pass through the area around Újezd via a dense network of forest roads.

Community life and other events

The Újezd tourist association was founded in 2013 and organizes excursions, meetings and nature-related events. Setkání na hranici is a regular meeting at the national border between Újezd and Sirákov. Slavnosti rumu is a regular event. Újezd has no railway stop. When planning a stay, both recurring events and the local transport situation are therefore specific factors to consider.
