Puklice: Castle, Churches and Hiking Trail

Puklice can be viewed from two perspectives: architectural and cultural history, and hiking. The castle, churches, chapels and Jewish heritage sites represent different historical themes, while the Jihlavský circuit adds a clearly defined route. Culture and History

Puklice Jewish Cemetery contains around 80 restored gravestones, mostly made of granite, with some made of marble and sandstone. The last burial at the Jewish cemetery took place in 1932. In 1722, Puklice had a synagogue in an attic room above a living room in house no. 35; the room featured Baroque vaults.

The single-nave filial Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Puklice was created between 1946 and 1948 by converting a former farm building. Its tower stands above the main entrance on the south side. The Neoclassical chapel on Puklice village square was built in 1846 and is considered an example of the creative adoption of late Baroque elements in vernacular sacred architecture. A late Baroque central chapel with a hexagonal floor plan stands in the open countryside on the road to Studénky near Puklice.

Puklice Castle probably originated as a late Gothic fortress. It is documented in connection with a sale in 1535 and was converted into a Renaissance-style building around 1578. Later, Neoclassical alterations were made to the castle. The approximately square courtyard is accessed through a passageway in the south wing. On the ground floor, arcades run along three sides of the courtyard.

Hiking

The Jihlavský circuit runs through a section near Puklice. A rerouted yellow-marked section runs between Puklice and Holý vrch outside Studénky and is 3.5 kilometres long. The places along the circuit are connected by public transport, rail or bus services.
