Lutonina – Průkopa Natural Monument and Local History

Lutonina combines local history, nature and rural architecture with technical and community-related connections. The individual topics range from early written records to a protected natural monument and from historic architectural forms to a route along a never-completed railway line.

History

The first written mention of Lutonina dates from 1261. It is connected with the founding of the Cistercian monastery of Smilheim in Vizovice. Another historical connection concerns the railway: in 1934, the Baťa company began construction of the Zlín–Valašská Polanka railway line. The railway project was intended to be extended as far as Púchov. Lutonina therefore preserves both a medieval connection with the founding of the monastery and an industrial-era project.

Nature

Průkopa was first placed under protection on 12 July 1984. Průkopa was designated a natural monument in 1993 and covers 2.56 hectares. Most of the protected area lies in the cadastral territory of Lutonina. The species kruštík bahenní, kruštík růžkatý and kruštík širolistý occur in the natural monument. Its protection history and precise area figure provide the natural area with a clearly defined framework.

Routes

A 12.2 km moderately difficult route follows a cycle path along the track bed of the never-completed Baťa railway. Approximately halfway along, the route turns towards Lutonina and passes through extensive meadows by the Průkopa Natural Monument. The length, difficulty level, approximate turn-off and character of the route are just as much part of the description as the connection between the railway track bed, the meadows and the protected area.

Culture

A granary belonging to rural estate No. 34 in Lutonina is a cultural monument. Vernacular architecture also includes a timber-framed rural building of the type in which living quarters are connected with utility rooms. Another connection leads to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm: the Valašské muzeum v přírodě features a replica of the stone part of the village smithy built in Lutonina in 1889.

A community event has also been recorded. At the beginning of January, a joint driven hunt was held in Lutonina with the MS Vizovice hunting association. The eighth event also attracted participants from elsewhere and people from various parts of the Czech Republic.
