Kaňovice: Landscape, Culture and Traditions

Kaňovice lies on the northwestern edge of the Vizovice Highlands. Its cultural landmarks include a heritage protection zone designated in 1994.

Landscape

The lowest point in Kaňovice is 240 m above sea level, where the Černý potok leaves the municipal area in the direction of Biskupice. Thus, in addition to its location on the edge of the Vizovice Highlands, there is also a precise elevation associated with a named watercourse and a clearly defined direction within the municipality.

Culture

The historic centre of Kaňovice is registered as an area with archaeological finds. The Chapel of Panna Maria Prostřednice všech milostí was built by local residents in 1951–1952. Its shell was completed within 14 days; the foundation stone had been blessed on 10 May 1951. The information about the chapel records both the construction period and the unusual course of the early construction phase.

Customs

Kaňovice continues to preserve the traditional carnival procession with masks, the fašankový průvod masek. The traditional Easter custom known as “klepání”, velikonoční „klepání“, is also still practised. In addition, the traditional event of erecting and felling the maypole, stavění a kácení máje, is held. For planning purposes, these three customs can be distinguished by their occasion and time of year. Thus, the carnival procession, Easter custom and maypole each have their own name and occasion, without merging into a single event.

Crafts

The Hrabinova farmstead, referred to as Rolnická usedlost č.p. 19, is used to present and promote traditional historic crafts. In 2011, the Hrabinova farmstead received an international award for exceptional earthen architecture in Europe. A personal visit to the renovated Hrabinova farmstead can be arranged in advance through the municipal office. The farmstead therefore encompasses its historic designation, the presentation of crafts, the award from 2011 and the possibility of arranging a personal visit in advance.

Landmarks in the Village

Crosses and wayside shrines in Kaňovice are located in the cemetery, by the chapel and along the roads towards Seče, Biskupice and Velký Ořechov. The village landmarks are therefore connected to three different types of reference points: the cemetery, the area around the chapel and the roads leading out of the village in the directions named above.

Cycling Route

The cycling tour “By Bike from Luhačovice to Uherský Brod” runs from Luhačovice via Biskupice towards Kaňovice. At the Seče stop, it branches off to Dobrkovice. The route description therefore lists the starting point, the route via Biskupice, the direction towards Kaňovice and the turn-off at Seče to Dobrkovice as successive orientation points.
