Valašské Klobouky: Nature, History and Architecture
Nature and Landscape
Valašské Klobouky lies in a valley basin surrounded by hills and at the northern tip of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. On the ridge above the town, between the peaks of Královec and Požár, lies the unique Ščúrnica fir-beech primeval forest.
History and Culture
In 1995, the urban heritage zone was designated in the historic town centre. It protects valuable historic buildings. The core of the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross dates from the 1340s. The religious architecture is complemented by the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in the Neo-Gothic style.
The Old Town Hall houses the Valašské Klobouky Town Museum. In front of the Old Town Hall stands a stone pillory from the 16th century, one of the oldest surviving pillories in the Czech Republic. In the Červený dům, the town museum’s second building, an exhibition presents clothmaking as well as linen production and dyeing. The house’s Soukenická jizba also contains a functioning loom. Together, the Old Town Hall and the Červený dům make up the town museum, with two buildings devoted to different themes. The historic town centre connects these museum sites with other protected historic buildings.
Architecture
Bratmann Villa was designed by Hubert Gessner and is one of the first new buildings constructed in Valašské Klobouky after the 1896 fire. Josef Bratmann’s house was designed by the architect Hubert Gessner in 1895. The presentation of Hubert Gessner’s architecture comprises two complementary exhibitions. The first of these exhibitions is located in the town museum on the square, in the Old Town Hall building. The villa thus stands alongside the historic religious and museum buildings as a distinct architectural focal point.
