Velký Ořechov – Fortress, St. Wenceslas and Educational Trail

The fortress is the centerpiece of Velký Ořechov’s architectural history. It preserves several Baroque portals, dates from the 15th century, and was remodeled in the 18th century. It is of particular historical, architectural, and urban-planning importance.

Culture

The Church of St. Wenceslas is part of the village’s sacred architecture. The Baroque church, dating from the late 17th century, is designed in the style of the late Italian Baroque. It contains a main altar dedicated to St. Wenceslas and side altars dedicated to the Marriage of the Virgin Mary and St. Wendelin. Thus, alongside the fortress, the ecclesiastical buildings and their own historical and artistic features are also central.

In the center of Velký Ořechov stands a stone statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from 1733. It is located on a masonry pedestal that was refurbished more recently. South of Velký Ořechov, beside a road, stands the small roadside niche chapel “Boží muka,” dating from the late 18th century.

Nature

The “Po hranici devíti katastrů” educational trail is suitable for cycling and runs mostly through easily accessible, almost level woodland. A branch leads via Velký Ořechov toward Luhačovice or Zlín. Thus, this route includes both the described use and a course connecting the village with two different directions.

A 2.5-hectare multipurpose water reservoir was created on the Částkovský stream in Velký Ořechov. The village’s cadastral area also contains a protected sulfur spring. Together, these details supplement the landscape description with specific water and natural features.

Events

The Ořechovjané brass band is part of the local cultural life. It performs at various celebrations, balls, dance events, fairs, church ceremonies, and other occasions.

At the 2025 Veliký Ořechov Easter Fair, vendors offered Easter eggs, Easter decorations, jewelry, honey, wooden products, Frgály, muffins, and Ořechovské oplatky. Refreshments including coffee or tea were also available, along with children’s workshops. The fair thus combined goods, regional products, and a program for children as part of a local event.

The 20th edition of the “O PUTOVNÍ POHÁR SDH VELKÝ OŘECHOV A VINAŘSTVÍ TOMÁŠE JURÁKA” firefighter sports competition was announced for 2026. This event should therefore be understood as an announcement for 2026.
