Podhradí U Luhačovic – Hotel between Hiking Trails and History

Podhradí U Luhačovic lies in the valley of the Pozlovický potok and is surrounded by forests on three sides. The village is located in the immediate vicinity of the spa town of Luhačovice. The access road to Podhradí ends beyond the village. In this landscape, marked trails, springs, historical traces, and regional architectural styles come together.

Nature and Trails

A blue-marked hiking trail approximately 30 kilometres long runs through Podhradí. It leads from Luhačovice via Pozlovice, Starý Světlov, Spletený vrch, Kláštov, Svéradov, and Kopce mountain to Čertovy skály. There are also a number of marked hiking trails in and around Podhradí.

The “Na Komonec nad Luhačovicemi” route can also be ridden by mountain bike. It connects an educational trail, marked hiking trails, and forest paths. This means that different types of trails exist side by side in Podhradí, without their respective routes or uses coinciding.

Springs and Water

The Sojsinka spring lies on the educational trail below Starý Světlov. The Sirčena sulphur spring also rises at the upper end of Podhradí. The protected surroundings of this mineral spring include a developed rest area.

Near the Turecký kříž grows the rare European wild service tree, Jeřab oskeruše, estimated to be more than 300 years old. On the outskirts of Podhradí, a small reservoir offers the opportunity to swim outdoors during hot summer months.

Culture and History

The wooden bell tower in Podhradí is part of the characteristic folk architecture of Luhačovské Zálesí. The village is also home to a wooden log chapel that is typologically reminiscent of Jurkovič’s buildings on Pustevny. The Turecký kříž is a stone cross dating from 1663 and a monument to the Ottoman wars.

Podhradí was first mentioned in 1563, at that time under the name Podhradí Starosvětlovské. Northwest of the village lies the extensive ruins of the medieval Starý Světlov Castle, built in the 14th century; its remains have been preserved in the landscape.

Traces of the Castle

At Starý Světlov, simple terrain steps have been installed in hard-to-reach places. They are intended to prevent visitors from damaging the terrain. An information system at Starý Světlov provides information about the construction history of the castle.

Fragments of the mechanism of a bascule drawbridge were found in the castle gate of Starý Světlov. Remains of a medieval counterfeiters’ workshop were identified in one of the rooms of the palace. Every year, guided castle tours with commentary and lectures on the history and significance of the site take place there. Podhradí organises these events in cooperation with the National Heritage Institute and the Museum of Luhačovické Zálesí.

Summer Cultural Programme

The Anenská pouť pilgrimage festival takes place in Podhradí in summer. Locals call it the Podhradská pouť. The festival offers an extensive cultural programme as well as fairground rides.
