Geographical Setting
Darcheli is considered a settlement in the Odishi Lowland on the right bank of the Jumi, a tributary of the Enguri, in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region. The Jumi Valley near Darcheli is associated with natural views and landscapes. The Odishi Lowland is associated with plantations and fertile soils.
Culture
Written sources mention Darcheli as early as the 17th century; at that time, one of the palaces of the Abkhazian Catholicos stood there. Construction of the Church of St. George began on 5 August 2008, and its consecration took place on 6 November 2016. The church was built through the considerable efforts of local residents.
The Darcheli Church is regarded as an example of traditional church architecture in Samegrelo. Much of the Church of St. George is decorated with frescoes, and the church grounds have been landscaped. The complex includes a bell tower and a refectory associated with a Sunday school.
Nature
Darcheli's humid subtropical climate is considered favourable for growing hazelnuts, citrus fruits and maize. Darcheli has a twelve-hectare hazelnut grove that was established in 1995 and 1996. The hazelnut grove borders the Patara Enguri River, a maize field and an undeveloped field.
Local Life
A Megrelian homestead associated with Darcheli is characterised by traditional architecture and hospitality. Hazelnut processing is also part of the local scene: the processing factory of the Association Caucasnut in Darcheli can be reached by car and public transport. The Association Caucasnut's centre in Darcheli offers hazelnut products.
