Culture and History
Chakvinji Fortress in the village of Jikhashkari is associated with Davit Dadiani, the last ruler of Samegrelo: he was born in a small house within the fortress. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the fortification was incorporated into the domestic holdings of the Dadiani dynasty.
The earliest defensive layers are attributed to the Kingdom of Egrisi, known as Lazica in Byzantine sources. Chakvinji Fortress is an architectural and archaeological monument dating from the 5th to the 17th century. It has also been assigned to the category of cultural heritage of national significance.
Architecture
The Chakvinji Fortress complex includes a citadel, a tower with a tunnel, a palace, and a church. The citadel has an elongated oval ground plan, is 100 meters long, and up to 30 meters wide.
Location
The fortress stands on a high limestone hill on the left bank of the Chanistsqali. It is located in a border zone between the villages of Jikhashkari and Chakvinji.
Access
The fortress is described as easily accessible and as an attraction along the road from Zugdidi to Chkhorotsku. The current road to the fortress ascends from the south.
