What shapes the landscape and townscape?
Its location in the Fertő-Hanság National Park is an important geographic point of reference for Fertőhomok. In the village itself, the tájház and Szent Anna-templom provide further landmarks: the Roman Catholic church stands on a hill above the village, with a staircase leading up to it. When exploring the townscape, you can therefore consider the natural setting and built heritage separately.
In the wider Raab–Wieselburg–Ödenburg travel region, the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds, and shoreline areas. This broader landscape provides regional context; Fertőhomok’s own points of reference remain the lake, the national park, and local cultural sites.
What can you discover at the Fertőhomoki tájház?
The first room and kitchen of the Fertőhomoki tájház display a home interior from the 1930s. The building’s history is also part of the visit: it was largely rebuilt in 1930 after the earlier, thatched-roof building burned down.
The former stable serves as an exhibition space. Each year, three to four contemporary artists can show their work there. Behind the barn, there is also an open-air stage with a seating area, intended for concerts, theater performances, and dance performances. If you plan to visit an exhibition or event, check the date in advance.
Local traditions are also part of the village’s cultural life. The singing and dance choir and tambura orchestra of the Fertőhomok Cultural Association preserve local traditions and play an important role in shaping the community.
What routes and experiences can you plan?
For exploring on foot, the Békakonty nature trail has a clearly described approach: a gently descending gravel path behind the municipal office leads to the trail. After about 300 meters, it is on the left. From the information boards, the path continues to the Homoki-csatorna.
By bike, Fertőhomok is part of the “Fertő tótól az Alpokaljáig” circular route. These are two distinct route options: the nature trail, with its information boards and a continuation to the canal, and the circular cycling route through the village. When planning, check which route description suits you and the current conditions.
Another possible activity is a visit to the Szentkői sörház in central Fertőhomok. The brewery tours introduce visitors to the brewing process and the products. Check the tour date in advance.
