Culture and History

Öreglak is first recorded in the papal tithe register of 1332–37; its priest, Pál, is also mentioned there.

The church of Öreglak was dedicated to Saint Bartholomew in 1456.

The fortified site at Lak is documented in 1490 as “Castellum Lak” and was probably built by the Laki-Thúz family.

During Ottoman rule, Lak Castle was occupied by the Ottomans. Surviving payroll records list a garrison of 138 men for 1568–69 and a garrison of 29 men for 1628–29.
