Kaszó: Discover Moorland and Forest Nature

• The nearly 220-hectare Baláta-tó Nature Reserve is located near Kaszó. It has been protected since 1942 and is the oldest nature reserve in Somogy County.

Baláta-tó combines a long history of protection with distinctive plant life. The area has been protected since 1942 and is considered the oldest nature reserve in Somogy County. One notable plant is Aldrovanda vesiculosa: it is rare, carnivorous and found in floating mats of vegetation. Heart-leaved pondweed, bog strawberry, sphagnum mosses, marsh gentian and Carpathian crocus also grow there.

The Dr. Marián Miklós sétány offers glimpses into the world of the moor without disturbing the natural features it introduces. The approximately 600-metre-long trail runs along a boardwalk above the moorland meadow. At Baláta-tó, the focus is therefore not only on the protected area, but also on its distinctive plants and moorland habitat.

Renovated in 2025, the Öregerdő Tanösvény is just under 1.5 kilometres long. Its eight stations and 15 information boards cover the components, interactions and diversity of the forest community. They also explore the forest’s layers and the common plants and animals of the forest area. The Lombkorona Tanösvény offers a different perspective: it runs at the level of the lower canopy, 9.5 metres above the ground, and is about 124 metres long. The trail introduces typical forest plants and animals. Compared with the Öregerdő Tanösvény, at just under 1.5 kilometres long, it is considerably shorter; the descriptions of the two trails refer to different formats, not the same topics or length.

Near Kaszó, the Kaszói Vadaspark showcases native big game species across 2.5 hectares. The operator describes it as a guided activity. This visit differs from the trails, which focus on moorland or forest habitats.

The Kaszói Állami Erdei Vasút runs a round trip between Kaszó and the Baláta stop. For 2026, the operator lists the period from 11 April to 31 October; check the timetable before travelling. One hour is allocated for exploring the Dr. Marián Miklós sétány independently. This time estimate applies to the trail, not to the duration of the forest railway journey.
