The early history of Szalafő dates back to the period after the Hungarian Conquest: initially, the settlement served as a seat for princely border guards, and after the foundation of the Hungarian state, as a seat for royal border guards. An ancient Roman military road ran through the Rába Valley towards Savaria (Szombathely).

The first documented mention of Szalafő dates from 1393; a document from 1428 listed the settlement as part of Őrség.

The Pityerszer Open-Air Museum in Szalafő is an open-air museum that presents the traditional life of the Őrség border guards.
