Culture
The Semey Regional Museum of History and Local Lore was founded in 1883. It presents the history of the region from the earliest times to the present day in seven enfilade halls equipped with touchscreen kiosks, widescreen projectors, and televisions.
The Dostoevsky Literary-Memorial Museum was established in 1971 in the house where Fyodor Dostoevsky lived from 1857 to 1859. More than 15 exhibitions are held there every year, based on museum holdings and private collections. In 2017, the museum was included in Kazakhstan’s list of 100 sacred places.
A tour of the main Abai Museum begins in the domed building with the exhibition “Abai. Seasons,” based on Abai Kunanbayuly’s poems about the seasons. In the multimedia hall of the Abai Museum, visitors can listen to Abai’s melodies and watch reports, documentaries, and feature films about the poet.
The Nevzorov Museum offers guided tours and lectures in Kazakh, Russian, and English, as well as educational programs and master classes. The Alash Arystary–Mukhtar Auezov Museum is housed in the wooden two-story house of Aniyar Moldabayev, one of Abai’s students.
Leisure
Beibitшілік Island is described as the largest river island in Central Asia. It has professional training equipment, football, volleyball, and streetball courts, workout zones, and bicycle parking.
A children’s railway on Beibitшілік Island was restored and officially opened in 2024. The route is two kilometers long; the railway is described as having one locomotive and three carriages for 70 passengers.
