Nature

Saryshagan Bay occupies the flooded mouth of the Mointy River. In the northwestern part of the bay, flooded rocky granite hills create an island-like relief. Along Saryshagan Bay, the beach ridges are described as well developed; they reach a height of 3 to 4 meters.

History

The Sary-Shagan test site is described as the location of the world's first destruction of a ballistic missile warhead by a V-1000 interceptor in 1961. It is also described that the test site was established in 1956 near Lake Balkhash to develop technical solutions for an anti-ballistic missile system.

Getting There and Location

Sary-Shagan railway station is located within the settlement of Saryshagan. It lies on the Moyynty–Birlik 1 railway line between Koktas and Sulyzher. Passenger trains serving the station include those running in the directions of Kyzylorda–Astana, Astana–Saryagash, Shymkent–Astana, and Almaty–Pavlodar. Passenger luggage handling and ticket sales are available at the station.

The passenger platform in Saryshaghan is being reconstructed in phases while train and passenger services continue without interruption.

Orientation

Swimming is not permitted along the 200-meter section of the Lake Balkhash shore near the water pumping station northeast of Saryshagan.
