Discover Karaganda: Nature, Culture and History

The region’s landscapes include granite mountains, gorges, springs and steppe. Those interested in culture can visit museums, historic wooden architecture and monuments dating from the Late Bronze Age. In Karaganda itself, you’ll find the Central Park of Culture and Recreation and the Karaganda Regional EcoMuseum.

The Bugyly mountain oasis in Shet District brings together granite mountains, scenic gorges, clear springs, vast steppe and ancient historical monuments. Buiratau National Park is another distinctive natural area. It lies in Osakarovsky District, in the transition zone between the moderately arid and arid steppe subzones. Karkaraly Park and the shores of Lake Balkhash are also popular recreational spots in the region.

At 1,565 m, Aksoran Peak is the highest point in the Kyzylarai Mountains and the Saryarka Kazakh Uplands. The ascent from the Torkora tract to the summit is reported to be about 3.4 km long, with an elevation gain of approximately 560–600 m. These approximate figures can help you take the distance and elevation gain into account when planning your own route; on their own, they do not indicate how long the hike will take.

At the shore of Lake Kim-Asar, also known as Komissarovskoye, stands the ranger house in Karkaraly State National Park. Built in 1910, the building is a historic wooden monument in the Komissarovka area and is one of the park’s official tourist destinations. The site thus combines a natural area with a building from the region’s history.

The Karazharthas burial site lies in the Taldy River valley in Shet District. It is an archaeological monument dating from the Late Bronze Age, specifically the 13th–9th centuries BC, and is part of Taldy Historical and Archaeological Park. The Begazy-Dandybay mausoleums in the same district are megalithic burial structures from the Late Bronze Age (12th–8th centuries BC). The different dates refer to the respective sites; both offer a reason to make the region’s archaeological history a focus of your trip.

In Karkaralinsk, you’ll find the house of merchant Khalulla Bekmetyev. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it is considered a distinctive example of merchant wooden architecture and forms part of the Qaraghandy region’s historical and cultural heritage. The Kunanbay-Kazhy Mosque in Karkaralinsk is a locally significant architectural monument from the 19th century and a historical, cultural and sacred site. It is associated with Kunanbay Uskenbayev, the father of Abai Kunanbayev.

The Karkaraly Museum of History and Local Lore explores the history of the Karkaraly region, Saryarka’s natural heritage, archaeological monuments and the cultures of the peoples who live there. It is housed in a historic 19th-century building in Karkaraly. The Karaganda Regional EcoMuseum is Kazakhstan’s first specialised environmental museum; its address is 47 Bukhar-Zhyrau Avenue in Karaganda.

Karaganda’s Central Park of Culture and Recreation has tree-lined avenues, a scenic lake, modern amusement rides, a beach and sports facilities.
