Bijela was first mentioned in a document from Kotor dating from 1333 under the name Sankti Petri. A document from 1355 mentions Bijela under its current name. Sankti Petri was the site of a Benedictine monastery and a small church; the locality is now called Rake.

The Church of Sv. Vrači in Bijela dates from the 18th century. Riza Bogorodice in Bijela was built in the 19th century on the foundations of a 12th-century church. The Church of Rize Bogorodice in Bijela preserves the apse of an older church from the 12th or 13th century, as well as remains of medieval frescoes.

Petar in Bijela stands on foundations dating from the 9th century and was rebuilt in the 15th and 18th centuries. Architectural fragments of Sv. Petar in Bijela date from the 9th to the 11th century. Petra in Bijela is dated to 1783. Bijela is also recognized for its maritime shipbuilding tradition, which continues to this day.
