Culture and History
Podgorica’s Old Town was the city centre during the Ottoman period from 1474 to 1879. Its clock tower was built in the 18th century by Hadži Mehmed-paša Osmanagić. Podgorica’s old hammam was built in an oriental style during the Ottoman period. At the site of the former hammam, the Karver bookshop hosts literary events.
Kuslev’s House is one of the few surviving examples of authentic early 20th-century Balkan architecture and contains the exhibition “Kuslev’s House – a Journey Through Time”. Čubranović House is legally protected as an important cultural and historical site. Petrović Palace was a former residence of the Petrović dynasty, was built in 1891 and has the status of a cultural monument.
The Church of St. George at the foot of Gorica Hill was built between the 9th and 11th centuries. Sastavci Stone Bridge is the oldest bridge in Podgorica; at the same time, it is believed to date from the Roman period.
Art and Exhibitions
Podgorica has several museums and galleries, including the Modern Gallery, the Rista Stijović Gallery in the Old Town and the permanent exhibition “When Nature Speaks” at the Natural History Museum of Montenegro. The Center for Contemporary Art of Montenegro holds a collection of more than 1,000 exhibits from 60 countries.
Getting Around
Gorica Hill has hiking, cycling and triathlon routes and includes a Mediterranean garden with endemic species. The Circuit around Korita starts in Podgorica and is 65 kilometres long.
Near Podgorica, a kayaking route on the Zeta River covers 4 kilometres and takes around two hours. The Dajbabe Monastery near Podgorica uses a natural cave as a church site.
Food and Wine
Podgorica’s Old Town offers traditional specialities in authentic restaurants or cafés. Keković Winery has preserved a family tradition of wine production spanning three generations.
