Barchlin: Landscape, Park and Architectural History

The landscape park in the northwest of Barchlin is roughly rectangular and covers 1.6 hectares. The manor house park dates from the late 19th century and includes a pond, a stately white poplar with a trunk circumference of about 370 centimetres, and an oak with a trunk circumference of 310 centimetres. The white poplar therefore has the larger stated trunk circumference; its measurement should be understood as approximate.

Alongside its location on the edge of two landscape areas, the green spaces give Barchlin a more tangible scale: the focus is on an area measurement, the approximate shape of the park and the measurements of individual trees. A yew designated as a natural monument also stands on the lawn in front of the manor house. Its four trunks and trunk circumference of 230 centimetres make it a distinct, clearly identifiable feature of the local landscape.

There are 22 archaeological sites in Barchlin. They add an archaeological dimension to the village’s architectural history. The Koźlak windmill has historical, technical and architectural value; a manor house in the form of a Neo-Renaissance villa stands in the northern part of the village. Farm buildings dating from the late 19th century are located near the manor house.

Neo-Renaissance refers to the later revival of Renaissance forms. The term helps place the villa’s style without equating it with a building from the original Renaissance. Together with the windmill and farm buildings, it offers several ways to explore Barchlin’s architectural history: architecture, technical significance and the historic use of buildings can be considered as distinct themes.

On a reported family bike ride, the route began in Barchlin and went via Poświętno, Charbielin, Boszkowo, Starkowo, Sączkowo, Kluczewo and Borek before returning to Barchlin. This was the route taken on that ride, not a permanently marked route.

As part of the expansion and modernisation of the Social, Cultural and Sports Centre, a fire-pit area with benches was created. An outdoor fitness area with three pieces of equipment for seniors and other groups in society was also set up there. Who had the manor house built, and when?

The manor house, in the form of a Neo-Renaissance villa, was built in 1893 by the then landowner Fryderyk Ksawery Speichert. It stands in the northern part of Barchlin.
