Lyck at a glance

Lake Ełk lies in the centre of Lyck. Along its shore are a promenade almost 7 km long and two bathing beaches. You can walk or cycle along the promenade; it can also be used for inline skating. Sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing are possible on the lake.

Transport connections are also relevant when planning your trip: Lyck is served by national roads 16 and 65 and railway lines 38, 41, 219 and 223. The railway station and bus station are right next to each other. The railway station is at 16 Dąbrowskiego Street, and the bus station at 1 Dąbrowskiego Street.

What experiences does Lake Ełk offer?

Families with children and teenagers can also visit two places with distinct designs. The climbing park on the shore of Lake Ełk has three courses of varying difficulty, adapted to users’ ages. Kopernika Park on ul. Wojska Polskiego is designed as an educational park: its layout is based on a planetary system and introduces children and teenagers to astronomy and physics through play. It lies near the mouth of the Ełk River.

Which routes suit your travel plans?

The routes around Lyck vary in length and course. The blue “Morenowe Wzgórza” route is 30 km long and runs from Lyck via Straduny, Piaski, Malinówka, Królowa Wola, Czerwonka, Grabnik and Chrzanowo back to Lyck. The Michał Kajka Route starts in Lyck and runs 37 km to Skomack Wielki. The Tatar Route is 19 km long: it starts in Lyck and runs via Szyba, Tatar Hill, Chochołki and Ostrykół to Prostki and Bogusze.

Another option is the 15 km MTB route in Ełk County. It runs in the area around Tatar Hill and Lake Tatar along the Lyck–Wiśniowo Ełckie route. When comparing different routes, you can use their lengths and the places named for each as a guide to choosing, without combining them into a single route.

The Pope’s Route offers a different way to get around: its individual stages can be covered on foot or by bicycle year-round, and on skis in winter. The route starts in Lyck at the place where Saint John Paul II celebrated the Eucharist on 8 June 1999. When planning a trip, both the stages and the mode of transport specified for each are therefore relevant.

What is worth knowing about getting there and visiting the city?

The neighbouring railway and bus stations on Dąbrowskiego Street make it easy to navigate between the two modes of transport, without having to plan for different locations around the city. If you are interested in a train ride, the Ełk Narrow-Gauge Railway offers another option: tourist passenger trains currently run with a diesel locomotive on the Lyck–Sypitki–Lyck route, according to a timetable or by arrangement.

The city centre also has its own cultural highlight. There you will find a group of 19th-century townhouses with Art Nouveau and eclectic elements. They add an urban perspective to the lakeside attractions and routes around Lyck.
