Ighiu: Churches, Roman History and Nature in Alba County
Culture and History
The Orthodox Church of Sfânta Parascheva in Ighiu was built in 1724. The earth-and-timber fort at Ighiu was a small Roman fortification that guarded the entrance to the gold-bearing area of the province of Dacia.
The ensemble of the Reformed Church in Ighiu comprises the Reformed Church of Ighiu, the ruins of the fortified enclosure and the former Evangelical vicarage of the Reformed congregation. The Reformed Church of Ighiu was built between 1781 and 1783.
The present-day Reformed Church of Ighiu is stylistically classified as late Baroque and Rococo. It is surrounded by the remains of a 15th-century fortification, in which several Gothic elements have been preserved. The entrance bastion and the Gothic gate of the fortification at the Reformed Church of Ighiu are integrated into a two-storey building erected in 1712. The Reformed Church of Ighiu has a historic organ made by Johan Han the Younger in 1796.
The cemetery of the Reformed Church of Ighiu contains the grave of the pre-Enlightenment scholar Péter Bod, a former Reformed pastor, historian and Transylvanian writer.
