Moneasa – Spa Town at the Codru-Moma Mountains

Moneasa has been known since the 16th century and is particularly valued for its mesothermal springs. In 1886, Moneasa was granted spa town status by the Imperial Ministry of the Interior in Vienna.

Nature and Water

Moneasa lies at an altitude of almost 300 m at the foot of the Codru-Moma Mountains. Moneasa's mineral water is rich in bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium. Aqua Ștrand Moneasa has three pools supplied with thermomineral water that emerges from the spring at 31 °C. The black-and-red marble quarry in Moneasa offers an impressive landscape with its large, stepped quarry face. For planning a day, altitude, water and the quarry can be considered as clearly distinct themes.

Experiences

From the access area to the quarry, the viewpoint in Moneasa can be reached via a path of approximately 200 m, marked with double white and red circles. The “Grota Ursului” Cave contains real fossils of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus). In addition, the “Grota Ursului” Cave has a 200-metre-long, fully electrified section that may only be visited as part of guided tours led by specialists.

Culture and History

The village museum of Moneasa contains a collection of old objects that reconstructs a traditional household. The collection includes tools, furniture, vessels, newspapers and traditional costumes. The “Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel” Hermitage is an Orthodox hermitage on a gently sloping hill in the heart of the spa resort of Moneasa. The Czárán-Gyula monument in Moneasa commemorates the passion, courage and generosity with which he advanced tourism in the Apuseni Mountains. The ruins of the iron-smelting furnace in Moneasa are important evidence of the intensive iron processing carried out in the Sebiș–Moneasa sector in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Local Tradition

The “Parada Clătitelor” Festival has a tradition in Moneasa dating back two decades and attracts thousands of visitors from several counties every year.
