Șagu – Archaeology, Churches and Accommodation in the Câmpia Vingăi

Șagu can be explored through archaeological sites, churches and the development of the settlement. For visitors who want to combine cultural traces with a clear geographical context, there are several different points of reference here: historical findings, church architecture and a landscape whose transport links extend in various directions.

Archaeology

The Șagu-Sit A1_1 archaeological site is located on the first terrace of a former riverbed or former river branch of the Mureș, 200 metres south of the midpoint between Șagu and Cruceni, on the road connecting the two places. Excavations at the Șagu – Site A1_1 archaeological site covered almost 3 hectares and revealed remains from the first phase of the Late Bronze Age. The Șagu-Vest archaeological site is recorded 1.23 kilometres northwest of the Orthodox Church of Șagu and 420 metres southeast of the left slope of the Valea Viilor stream. The combination of terrain form, distance information and chronology can be considered separately when preparing your own visit: one site can be understood through its location and excavation area, the other through two precise geographical reference lines.

Culture and History

The settlement of Șagu experienced renewed growth after German colonisation in 1770. As part of the redesign of the settlement after 1770, a new Catholic church was built in the centre of Șagu. The first Orthodox church in Șagu was built on the ruins of a medieval Catholic church. The Orthodox Church of Șagu was consecrated on 14 October 1994 by Patriarch Teoctist together with Nicolae, Metropolitan of Banat, and Timotei, Archbishop of Arad. The walls of the church in Șagu were decorated with frescoes by Mihail Bălășescu between 1982 and 1986. The dates help ensure that the settlement’s development, construction history, consecration and decoration are not condensed into a single period.

Geographical Context

Șagu is located in the Câmpia Vingăi, which is part of the Câmpia Tisei. The DJ 682 G connects Șagu with Cruceni and continues via the DJ 682 A towards Firiteaz. The DN 69 national road is the most important transport link through the Șagu commune and connects it with Arad and Timișoara. When planning routes, you can consider the connection to Cruceni and Firiteaz separately from the main route to Arad and Timișoara.

Local Festival

The Ziua Comunei Șagu is a recurring local festival. The 2026 edition is considered the twelfth edition; the festival is regarded as having already become a tradition.
