Ghioroc – Lake, Winegrowing and Electric Tram History

Ghioroc Lake lies at the foot of the Zărand Mountains, covers 66 hectares and is up to 10 metres deep.

Nature

The beach at Ghioroc Lake has sand, palm trees, canopy-covered beach beds and swan-shaped pedal boats. Fishing is permitted in the lake all year round and across its entire surface, except during the legally prescribed closed season. Those who want to explore the landscape on foot can take the Ghioroc–Valea Cladovei hiking trail: it is marked blue, 6.8 km long, takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, has a low difficulty level and is accessible year round. Culture

The Orthodox Church of “Sfântul Mucenic Dimitrie” in Ghioroc dates from 1793.

History

The first electrified tram line in Eastern Europe and the eighth in the world was opened in Ghioroc. The old electric train of Podgorie ran as far as Ghioroc and is known by the name “Săgeata Verde”. Săgeata Verde made its first journey on 1 December 1906.
