Alt-Petschka between the Mureș floodplains and culture

Alt-Petschka puts the protected natural landscape “Lunca Mureșului” near Pecica in the foreground. It encompasses former channels of the Mureș, floodplain vegetation and a species-rich birdlife, and is suitable for fishing and birdwatching. A visit can therefore focus on nature observation and culture as two clearly distinct themes.

Nature

Within the territory of Pecica, the Mureș River forms broad meanders and former channels that provide valuable habitats for the region’s flora and fauna.

Cycling Route

The “Arad-Pecica” cycling route ends in Pecica at the buffalo farm. It runs through woodland and along the banks of the Mureș through floodplain habitats where mammals or birds can often be observed. Along the cycling route, there are information boards about the protected area as well as rest areas and places to stop. When planning, the combination of the route, observation opportunities and rest areas can be considered a separate focus alongside the cultural sites.

Culture

The archaeological site “Dealul Vechi”, also known as “Movila dacică de la Pecica” or “Șanțul Mare”, contains traces of Neolithic cultures, the Free Dacians and the first centuries of the Middle Ages. The Biserica Romano-Catolică “Duminica Sfintei Treimi” in the centre of Pecica is a Baroque-style church built in the late 19th century. The church contains a painting by Rezso Gyongyossy.

Surroundings

The area around Pecica is home to the Biserica Catolică Satu Mare church, the Biserica Ortodoxă Satu Mare Orthodox church, Biserica Mailat church, the Fântâna de la Crucea Verde spring and the Szionda-halom hill. Further afield in the wider region around Pecica are the Biserica Romano-Catolică Sânpetru Mic church, the Fântâna lui Popa spring and the Dealul Flămânzi hill.

The Pecica buffalo farm was officially opened as a tourist attraction on 12 May 2012 near the centre of Pecica and in the vicinity of the “Lunca Mureșului” nature park. In Pecica, the reintroduction of a buffalo population was proposed in order to promote the original flora in the “Lunca Mureșului” nature park through grazing and to eliminate non-native vegetation.
