Arefu: History, Lake and Mountains

Arefu looks back on a history spanning more than 600 years and has been documented since 1558 by a charter issued by Voivode Mircea Ciobanul. The village lies on the right bank of the ArgeÈ™ River, which runs through it.

History and Culture

The war memorial stands in the courtyard of the Cuvioasa Parascheva Church; it was erected in 1935 and commemorates those who fell in the War of Independence and the First World War. The church itself dates from 1860.

In the village of Căpățânenii Ungureni, in the municipality of Arefu, Casa Gheorghe Stephănescu was built in 1873 and is listed as a historic monument. Casa Stephanescu is privately owned and may only be entered with the owners’ permission.

The Casa Rozeanu village museum is a traditional house from the ArgeÈ™ region and opened as a museum in 2016.

Historically, Arefu was a village of free peasants. Their ancestors passed down ownership rights to 16 surrounding mountains, which were directly recognized by the rulers of Wallachia.

History and Landscape

Poenari Fortress stands within the municipality on a steep rocky peak at the entrance to the ArgeÈ™ Gorge. At the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th century, it was first rebuilt and fortified by Vlad Dracul and subsequently by his son Vlad ÈšepeÈ™.

In the village of Căpățânenii Ungureni, at the foot of Poenari Fortress, stands Castelul Dracula Transfăgărășan. The Castel Dracula Museum is dedicated to the Dracula myth and offers historical exhibitions, guided tours, and an educational program on the Dracula myth and the medieval history of Wallachia.

Nature and Trails

Water sports and boat trips to the Cumpăna mountain hut are offered on Lake Vidraru. Hiking trails to the high peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains begin north of the lake, including Moldoveanu at 2,544 m and Negoiu at 2,535 m.

Within the municipality, the Pădurea Arefu forest is designated as a forest reserve. Near Piscul Negru there are three caves classified as natural monuments.

Routes and Orientation

The Valea lui Stan gorge route begins at the Transfăgărășan and is marked and appropriately equipped by Salvamont Argeș. Via Valahia reaches Arefu after crossing the Transfăgărășan and continuing along the Valea Larga.

Via Valahia was created in 2020 by the Asociația Montană Vidraru; the cultural-tourist journey highlights history and cultural points of interest. The Barajul Vidraru–Poiana Obârșiei–Baraj Vidraru route leads in the direction of Arefu.

The municipality of Arefu is accessible via the DC 249 Căpățâneni–Arefu road as well as via other municipal and forest roads.
