Bradu: Terraces, Churches and Air Sports

Bradu is a compact terraced settlement along the DJ 659. The municipality combines river landscapes, agriculture, churches, local events and various forms of air sports. As a result, very different topics come together in a small area: geographical context, historic buildings, seasonal community events and sporting activities at Aerodromul Geamăna.

Landscape and Location

The villages of the municipality of Bradu are situated on three terraces on the right bank of the Argeș and in its floodplain. Bradu lies within the catchment areas of the Argeș and Neajlov rivers. The terraces, riverbanks and floodplain create different landscape contexts, while the wider catchment areas of the two rivers place the municipality in its regional context.

Bradu provides access to the A1 motorway and the DN 65 B national road. The DJ 659 additionally defines the route along which the compact settlement structure is oriented. Alongside these transport connections, agriculture shapes the locality: Bradu is a grain- and vegetable-growing area. The water area, terraces, roads and cultivated land thus offer several clearly distinguishable perspectives on the municipality.

Churches and History

The Church of the Annunciation, “Buna Vestire”, stands in the centre of Bradu de Sus. Around 1753, a small wooden church with the same dedication initially stood on the site of the present-day church. The present-day Church of the Annunciation, “Buna Vestire”, in Bradu de Sus was consecrated on 20 September 1885. In the village of Bradu, a Church of the Annunciation, “Buna Vestire”, is designated as a tourist attraction.

In the village of Geamăna, in the municipality of Bradu, the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, “Înălțarea Domnului”, is designated as a historic monument. The Rotulești Church is dated to 1872. Thus, various historical points of reference stand alongside one another in the places mentioned: a church site in Bradu de Sus, the former wooden church from 1753, the consecration in 1885 and the dating of the Rotulești Church to 1872.

Culture and Activities

The Piteşti Aero Club uses Aerodromul Geamăna in Bradu as a training base for powered flight, parachuting, gliding and paragliding. Powered flight, parachuting, gliding and paragliding form four clearly separate areas of activity. They complement the locality-related topics with a sporting focus rooted at Geamăna airfield.

At the Bradu Cultural Centre, courses in traditional singing led by Claudia Șerbănescu were planned as part of the “Vocea Bradului” group. The Community Day of the municipality of Bradu is associated with the last weekend in May. The municipality of Bradu’s Festivalul Toamnei is associated with the end of October. Traditional singing, Community Day and Festivalul Toamnei thus represent different cultural and temporal points of connection within the municipality.
