Oarja: Religious Buildings and Memorial Sites

Oarja can be explored through its specific buildings and memorial sites. The “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” Church is a historic monument.

Culture and Remembrance

The memorial sites include the Oarja war memorial in the form of a column. It is 3.50 metres high and consists of a stepped prismatic base, a square shaft, a capital and a sphere attached on top.

Its main inscription commemorates the heroes who fell in the 1916–1918 war and records that the monument was erected by residents of Oarja and other donors. The cross monument in Oarja for those who fell in the First and Second World Wars was erected in 1921.

Oarja is home to the “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” Church of the Oarja parish; it is an Orthodox church. The wooden church in Belegani, in the village of Ceaușești in Oarja commune, Argeș County, bears the older dedications “Sfinții Voievozi” and “Cuvioasa Paraschiva”.

The combination of architectural form, inscription, year and ecclesiastical affiliation offers different perspectives on the locality without making any one building the sole point of reference. The various forms of construction and the inscription emphasize different aspects: architecture, religious affiliation, remembrance and the year can be considered separately.

The wooden church in Belegani adds another specific location within the commune to this sequence. Its location in Ceaușești and its two older dedications, “Sfinții Voievozi” and “Cuvioasa Paraschiva”, distinguish it from the churches and monuments in Oarja itself.
