Sângeorz-Băi: Hiking, Mineral Springs and Regional Culture

The officially certified mountain hiking route “Staţiunea Sângeorz-Băi – Valea Cormaia – Cabana Farmecul Pădurii – Vf. Cormaia” leads from Sângeorz-Băi through the Cormaia Valley and past Cabana Farmecul Pădurii to Vf. Cormaia. A second officially certified mountain hiking route is named “Staţiunea Sângeorz-Băi – Vf. Craia – Vf. Ţapului – Tarniţa Obârşia Rebrei”. It leads from Sângeorz-Băi via Vf. Craia and Vf. Ţapului to Tarniţa Obârşia Rebrei and is classified as difficult.

Hiking

The two routes follow different sequences of trails: one leads through the Cormaia Valley and past Cabana Farmecul Pădurii to a summit, while the other leads via Vf. Ţapului to a Tarniţa. The difficult classification applies to the route via Craia, Ţapului and Tarniţa Obârşia Rebrei. In mountain hiking, the two routes differ in their sequence of trails: the first connects a valley, a cabin and a summit, while the second leads over two summits to the Tarniţa and is classified as difficult. Trail conditions should be checked before setting out.

The waterfall Cascada Cailor is located in the wider regional surroundings of Sângeorz-Băi. The Omu summit is also situated in this wider regional area. The Buhăescu Mare summit is likewise located in the wider regional surroundings of Sângeorz-Băi, as is the Ineu summit. The waterfall and summits therefore form a series of named natural destinations outside the immediate vicinity of the town.

Cycling

Sângeorz-Băi offers visitors two cycling routes that can also be covered on foot. The cycling route “Traseul 2 – Pe Drumul Dosul Dealului” is 5,544 m long in total and has two ascent options: Glimeea and Ciocini. The Ciocini option is accessible from Hotel Hebe. For cycling tours, the route length is a different planning factor from the choice of ascent option. Current route conditions can be checked before setting out. Mineral Springs

Sângeorz-Băi has mineral springs containing bicarbonate, chloride, sodium, calcium and magnesium. Mineral mud and mofettes are also used in balneological treatments.

Culture and Tradition

The Muzeul de artă comparată Sângeorz Băi houses collections of folk and fine art. The holdings include painting, sculpture and ceramics, illustrating the cultural richness of the Sângeorz-Băi region.

From 2019 onward, the event “Sărbătoarea Străbunilor în Ținutul Grăniceresc – Măsura Laptelui – Transhumanța” was held in Sângeorz-Băi. The event is connected with the pastoral traditions of the Someș Valley. For events tied to specific dates, current dates should be checked before travelling.

The Piatra Fântânele Cross monument is also located in the wider regional surroundings of Sângeorz-Băi. The church Biserica Ortodoxă de Stil Vechi Mare Mucenic Sfântul Gheorghe is likewise situated in this wider regional area.
