Viștișoara: Mountain Hiking Trails, Peaks and Monasteries

Viștișoara is a starting point for numerous mountain hiking trails to the ridge of the Făgăraș Mountains. From here, Moldoveanu Peak is one destination along these mountain hiking trails.

Nature and Mountains

Lacul Viștișoara lies at an elevation of 2,040 meters below Șaua Viștișoarei, in the Viștișoara cirque. The lake, cirque, and pass refer to different elements of the same alpine landscape. The Ferăstrăul stream forms the Răcorele or Ferestrăul waterfall, with a drop of approximately 40 meters.

The hiking trail reaches an alpine zone from which the wild area of Pietrei Roșii is visible. The peaks of La Steghie, Hateganu, and La Piatra Mare are located in the immediate vicinity of Viștișoara. Gropanu is another peak in the vicinity of Viștișoara. Thus, in addition to the lake and waterfall, the landscape includes several named elevations and a visible alpine area.

Hiking Routes

The marked Viștișoara–Muchia Drăguşului–Valea Sâmbăta hiking trail connects Viștișoara with Valea Sâmbăta via Curmătura Răcorelelor.

The Viștișoara–Șaua Răcore hiking trail begins in Viștișoara beside the DJ 102G county road. Its first 3.5 kilometers run along a forest road that ends behind the Lunca Largă meadow. The starting point at the county road, the length of the forest-road section, and the meadow as the named endpoint make the route of this trail comprehensible.

The Viștișoara–Valea Sâmbăta hiking trail includes a short section with fixed cables at La cheie. The Izvorul Părintelui Arsenie Boca–Muchia Drăguşului–Căldarea Răcorelelor hiking trail has a starting point from Viștișoara at Pârtia Drăguș in the direction of Muchia Drăguşului. The route descriptions therefore mention different features: a connection via a Curmătura, a forest road measuring 3.5 kilometers, a section with fixed cables, and a starting point at Pârtia Drăguș. Culture and History

Viștișoara began as a hamlet of Viştea de Sus. During the months when the villagers worked in the forest, they spent the night in the hamlet. This history of its origins adds a brief historical reference to the former use of the place alongside the landscape.

Sambata Monastery is a monastery in the immediate vicinity of Viștișoara. Mânăstirea Ortodoxă Brâncoveanu is also a monastery in the immediate vicinity. The area around Viștișoara also contains Biserica Ortodoxă Sfinţii Împăraţi Constantin şi Elena and Biserica Viştea de Sus; both are churches.

Monasteries and churches therefore form a distinct cultural area alongside the hiking trails, lake, waterfall, and peaks.
