Vama Buzăului: Nature, Culture and Local Cuisine

Vama Buzăului begins with a specific landscape reference: the municipality is bordered to the southwest by the Ciucaș Massif mountain range. The Vama Buzăului–Poiana Dălghiu–Poiana Teslei route is one of the three officially recognized tourist trails. The trail and the landscape setting indicate two different aspects of nature.

Nature and Wildlife

The Valea Zimbrilor Reserve was inaugurated in November 2008. Visitors can see European bison, reindeer, mouflon, red deer, fallow deer, peacocks and geese there. The Urlătoarele waterfalls, which are a tourist attraction, are also located in the municipality of Vama Buzăului. The reserve and the waterfalls represent different nature-related themes.

Culture and History

The sculpture exhibition held in the municipality of Vama Buzăului features works by local artists made of wood or metal. The sculptures in this exhibition remain on display in the village throughout the year. The ruins of an 18th-century Catholic chapel served as a place of worship for Catholic customs officials and Habsburg border guards. The former border guard post building in the municipality was also built in the 18th century. In warmer weather, the folk music festival “Vama de la Munte” took place in Vama Buzăului. The exhibition, historic buildings and folk music represent different cultural themes.

The cultural offerings also have different temporal references: the sculptures remain in the village throughout the year, the chapel and the border guard post building date from the 18th century, while the festival took place in warmer weather. Thus, a permanent exhibition, historical evidence and a time-bound musical event stand alongside one another.

Roads and Access

Vama Buzăului is not located on a national or European road. The municipality is crossed by county road DJ 103A and local road DC 49A; DJ 103A connects Tărlungeni with Brădet at DN 10. The access road to Vama Buzăului is considered to be in good condition. The road information therefore refers both to the two roads within the municipality and to the further route of DJ 103A via Tărlungeni and Brădet to its connection with DN 10.

Regional Cuisine

Local gastronomic establishments in the municipality of Vama Buzăului serve traditional dishes prepared exclusively from products obtained in local households. Visitors can buy products such as brânză de burduf and cașcaval there to take home. Dishes served on site and products for home use represent two forms of the offering.
