Bocșa: Churches, Mining History and Culture in the Banat

The Biserica „Sfântul Nicolae“ is a historic Category B monument built of stone and brick in the Baroque style; its construction date is considered to be either 1750 or 1795. The Biserica „Pogorârea Sfântului Duh“ in Bocșa Montană was built in 1798 and is a stone structure in the Baroque style. In Bocșa Vasiova, the Biserica „Naşterea Maicii Domnului“ was built of stone and brick; its floor plan is cross-shaped.

The Cracul cu aur mines near Bocșa comprise open-pit workings, adits driven both along and across the vein, shafts sunk directly into the ore vein, and spoil heaps. In the second half of the 19th century, Roman-era artifacts were discovered there as a result of mining, including stamped bricks of Legio IIII Flavia Felix. The mining facilities and the Roman bricks therefore belong to different historical layers of the same site.

The architectural history of Bocșa Montană includes two ensembles from different periods. The “Gara Bocșa Montană” ensemble dates from the 19th century. At the Muzeul de Sculpturi în Inox Constantin Lucaci – „Spațiu & Lumină“, the collection comprises 17 stainless-steel sculptures created by Constantin Lucaci.
